Transient neutropenia induced by transfusion of blood exposed to nylon fiber filters.
During the course of granulocyte collection by continuous-flow filtration leukopheresis, an abrupt fall in neutrophil count was noted (mean decrease 77%, range 64%-95%). Neutropenia occurred within 5 min of return of blood exposed to the nylon fiber filters and lasted less than 30 min. Saline exposed to the fibers, withdrawal and reinfusion of whole blood, and heparin did not cause neutropenia....
متن کاملNylon-fiber-induced neutrophil fragmentation.
We have investigated the effects of mechanical elution of neutrophils from nylon-wool fiber (NWF) using the scanning electron microscope and biochemical analysis of elution fractions. We have determined that mechanical removal of neutrophils from nylon-wool fiber disrupts neutrophils adherent to nylon-wool fiber and augments release of granules, release of peripheral cytoplasmic fragments, and ...
متن کاملinduced malaria caused by blood transfusion
the role of blood transfusion as a cause of induced malaria is a known fact, and an increase in this condition has already observed in iran mainly due to the increase in blood transfusions. among cases in whom the onset and course of the disease were followed, it was observed that fever and other symptoms of malaria usually appear about 6 weeks alter the transfusion and appear mainly among pati...
متن کاملNylon Fiber Leukapheresis : Associated Complement
The possible role of complement activation in the development of transient granulocytopenia during nylon fiber filtration leukapheresis ( FL) was studied in five normal donors. No changes in hemolytic complement (CH50) titers were observed in the donors’ circulating plasma at any point in the procedure. However, comparison of preand postfilter blood samples drawn 1 mm after donor blood passed t...
متن کاملComparative adherence of granulocytes to endothelial monolayers and nylon fiber.
Adherence of granulocytes to tissue culture monolayers of endothelium averaged 26.2 +/- 1.3% SEM, which was similar to their adherence on 50-mg nylon fiber columns (27.7 +/- 3.6%). In contrast, adherence to epithelial cells, fibroblasts, kidney cells, and plastic Petri dishes without monolayers was only 12.4, 9.9, 11.1, and 4.3%, respectively. Cyclic nucleotides and adherence-modifying plasma f...
